Where our water comes from
Most of the Las Vegas Valley's water comes from the Colorado River via Lake Mead, delivered by the Southern Nevada Water Authority and local utilities. The water is safe and treated, but it carries a high level of dissolved calcium and magnesium — the definition of hard water. You see it as white crust on faucets and spots on glasses. Inside your refrigerator, the same minerals deposit where you cannot see them.
What hard water does inside a refrigerator
- Water inlet valve: a fine screen at the inlet catches particles and scale. As it clogs, flow drops and ice cubes get smaller.
- Valve solenoid: scale can stop the valve from closing fully, causing drips or overfilling.
- Fill tube: reduced flow leaves water in the tube, where it can freeze and block the ice maker completely.
- Ice mold: scale makes cubes stick, which can jam the ejector.
- Water filter: the refrigerator filter is designed mainly for taste, odor and some contaminants. It clogs faster with very hard water.
What actually helps
- Change the refrigerator filter every six months — or sooner if flow slows. Use the correct filter for your model.
- Replace plastic supply lines with braided stainless lines.
- Consider a whole-house water softener or an inline scale-reduction cartridge on the refrigerator line.
- Dump old ice every few weeks if you do not use much. Stale ice clumps and absorbs odors.
- Fix small symptoms early. Smaller cubes are an early warning that the valve or filter is restricting flow.
Signs your ice maker is losing the fight
- Cubes are smaller or hollow
- The ice maker cycles but produces partial cubes
- A loud buzz when the ice maker fills
- Ice production stops, but the water dispenser still works
- Water drips into the ice bucket
If you see these signs, read ice maker not working or book a repair.
Frequently asked questions
Will a water softener damage my refrigerator?
No. Softened water is fine for refrigerator ice makers and dispensers.
Do refrigerator filters remove hardness?
Most refrigerator filters are not designed to remove hardness minerals. They improve taste and reduce certain contaminants. A softener or dedicated scale filter addresses hardness.
