Why ice makers fail so often in Las Vegas
Southern Nevada's tap water comes mostly from the Colorado River through Lake Mead, and it is very hard: loaded with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every time an ice maker fills, a little of that mineral content stays behind. Over months it narrows the water inlet valve screen, coats the fill cup, and builds scale on the mold. Hard water also shortens the life of refrigerator water filters. The result is a slow decline — smaller cubes, hollow cubes, then no ice at all.
Common ice maker problems
- No ice at all — failed water inlet valve, frozen fill tube, clogged filter, or a failed ice maker module
- Small or hollow cubes — low water pressure, a restricted valve or an overdue filter
- Ice maker frozen solid — common on French-door models with the ice maker in the fresh-food door, where a leaking seal lets warm air in
- Ice clumps or jams — infrequent use or a freezer running too warm
- Water leaking from the ice maker or dispenser
- Ice tastes or smells bad — old filter, old ice, or odors in the freezer
Brand-specific notes
- Samsung French-door refrigerators with the ice maker in the fresh-food door are known for ice buildup in the ice compartment and frozen fill tubes. Repair usually involves clearing ice, addressing the seal or heater and, on some models, updated parts.
- LG in-door ice makers can freeze up or stop dispensing for similar reasons.
- Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir share many ice maker designs; module and valve failures are typical.
- Sub-Zero and other built-ins use brand-specific ice makers and valves. We use original parts.
What you can check first
- Make sure the ice maker is switched on — look for a wire arm in the up position, or an on/off setting on the control panel.
- Confirm the freezer is at 0°F. Ice makers will not cycle in a warm freezer.
- Replace the water filter if it is more than six months old.
- Check the water supply line behind the refrigerator for kinks, and confirm the shutoff valve is open.
Frequently asked questions
How much does ice maker repair cost?
Most ice maker repairs fall between $250 and $450 on standard refrigerators, including the part. Built-in models cost more. See pricing.
Should I install a water softener or a filter for my ice maker?
A whole-house softener or an inline scale filter on the refrigerator supply line can extend ice maker and valve life significantly in Las Vegas. Change the refrigerator's own filter every six months.
