The 50% rule
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half of what a comparable new refrigerator would cost, and the refrigerator is past the middle of its expected life, replacing it usually makes more sense.
Expected lifespan by type
| Refrigerator type | Typical lifespan |
|---|---|
| Top-freezer | 12–17 years |
| Side-by-side, bottom-freezer, French door | 10–15 years |
| Built-in luxury (Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking, Miele) | 20+ years |
| Compact and beverage refrigerators | 6–10 years |
When repair is the clear choice
- The refrigerator is a built-in or column model. Replacement costs thousands of dollars and often requires cabinet work.
- The failure is a fan, defrost part, valve, ice maker, relay, sensor or gasket. These repairs typically cost a few hundred dollars.
- A manufacturer warranty covers the expensive part (for example, some LG compressors).
- The refrigerator is less than seven years old.
When replacement may be better
- A freestanding refrigerator older than about 10 years needs a compressor or sealed-system repair.
- The refrigerator has had several unrelated failures in the past year.
- The cabinet has rust, cracked liners or broken door hinges in addition to the current problem.
- Parts are discontinued.
Hidden costs of replacement
- Delivery, haul-away and installation
- Cabinet modifications if the new unit's dimensions differ
- Water line installation for ice and water
- Lost food and time without a refrigerator

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old refrigerator?
Often yes, if the repair is a fan, defrost part, valve or relay. For a compressor or sealed-system repair on a freestanding unit, usually not. For a built-in luxury refrigerator, usually yes.
Is a new refrigerator more energy efficient?
Generally yes, but the savings on a freestanding refrigerator are usually modest — rarely enough on their own to justify replacing a refrigerator that can be repaired for a few hundred dollars.
