Why garage refrigerators fail in Las Vegas
Refrigerators carry a climate rating. Many standard models are designed to operate in room temperatures roughly between 55°F and 110°F. A west-facing Las Vegas garage in July can sit above that for weeks. When it does:
- The compressor runs almost constantly and runs hot
- Condenser coils, already dusty from garage air, cannot shed heat
- Start relays and overloads fail from repeated heat cycling
- Door gaskets harden and crack, letting hot air in
- The fresh-food side warms up while the compressor works its hardest
In winter, the opposite problem occurs: on cold nights the thermostat in the fresh-food section rarely calls for cooling, so the freezer section on some designs stops getting cold and can thaw.
What we repair on garage refrigerators
- Start relays, overloads and capacitors
- Condenser fan motors
- Condenser cleaning (often the whole fix)
- Door gaskets
- Defrost failures and frozen drain lines
- Compressors, when the repair still makes financial sense
How to help your garage refrigerator survive summer
- Clean the condenser coils at the start of every summer.
- Give it room. Leave at least 3 inches behind the unit and keep the area below it clear.
- Keep it out of direct sun from an open garage door.
- Insulate or ventilate the garage if you can. A garage exhaust fan makes a measurable difference.
- Keep it reasonably full. Thermal mass helps the refrigerator recover after each door opening.
- Consider a garage-ready model when you replace it. Several brands sell refrigerators and freezers rated for wider temperature ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing an old garage refrigerator?
If the repair is a relay, fan or gasket, almost always. If it needs a compressor and is more than 10 years old, usually not — we will tell you.
Why does my garage freezer thaw in winter?
Many refrigerator-freezer combinations control cooling from the fresh-food side. When the garage is cold, that thermostat rarely turns the compressor on, so the freezer warms up. A dedicated garage-rated freezer avoids the problem.
