Signs of a refrigerant leak
- Both compartments slowly get warmer over days or weeks
- The compressor runs almost nonstop
- Only part of the evaporator coil frosts over, or none of it frosts
- An oily spot on tubing, at a joint or under the unit
- A faint hissing or gurgling that is new
- The refrigerator was recently moved, or a coil was pierced while chipping ice
These symptoms can also come from a dirty condenser, a failed fan or a defrost problem. We rule those out first.
Where refrigerators leak
| Location | Typical cause |
|---|---|
| Evaporator coil | Pierced while chipping ice, or corrosion on aluminum coils |
| Brazed joints | Vibration and thermal cycling over the years |
| Process tubes and service ports | Factory crimp or old repair failing |
| Condenser | Corrosion or physical damage |
| Tubing in the cabinet wall or around the doors | Corrosion, and the hardest leak to reach |
How we repair a leak
- Confirm low charge through system temperatures, pressures and frost pattern.
- Find the leak with electronic detection, pressure testing and, where needed, nitrogen standing-pressure tests.
- Recover any remaining refrigerant with certified equipment.
- Repair by brazing the joint, or replace the evaporator, condenser or tubing section.
- Install a new filter-drier.
- Pressure-test to verify the repair holds.
- Pull a deep vacuum.
- Weigh in the exact factory refrigerant charge.
- Test performance through a full cycle.
Why "just adding Freon" fails
A refrigerator that is low on refrigerant has a leak, so whatever is added will leak out again. On top of that, household systems hold only a few ounces, and an inaccurate charge damages the compressor. An EPA 608 certified technician repairs the leak, replaces the drier and weighs in the correct charge. That is the only repair that lasts.
Typical cost
| Refrigerator | Typical total (parts + labor) |
|---|---|
| Standard freestanding | $650 – $1,300 |
| Built-in / luxury | $1,000 – $2,200 |
A leak hidden inside foam insulation is sometimes not economical to repair on a freestanding refrigerator. We tell you that before you spend money, not after.
Frequently asked questions
Can a refrigerator refrigerant leak be repaired?
Yes, in most cases. Leaks at joints, coils and accessible tubing are repairable. Leaks inside the insulated cabinet wall sometimes are not, and we will say so.
Is a refrigerator refrigerant leak dangerous?
The amount of refrigerant in a household refrigerator is small. Many newer refrigerators use R-600a (isobutane), which is flammable in high concentration, so ventilate the room, avoid open flames near the unit and call a certified technician.
What does "sealed system" mean?
The compressor, condenser, evaporator, filter-drier and connecting tubing form a closed loop filled with refrigerant. Opening and repairing that loop is sealed-system work, and federal law requires EPA Section 608 certification for it.
