What makes a built-in refrigerator different
A built-in refrigerator sits flush with your cabinets, so it cannot breathe from the back like a freestanding unit. Instead, most built-ins mount the compressor, condenser and condenser fan on top of the cabinet, behind a removable grille, and pull air in and out through the front. Integrated column refrigerators and freezers go a step further: each column is a separate appliance with its own sealed system, often installed side by side behind custom panels.
That design has consequences for repair:
- The machine compartment is the first thing to check. A dusty top condenser causes high head pressure, warm temperatures and a compressor that runs constantly. In Las Vegas, where kitchens and attics run hot, this is the single most common built-in failure we see.
- Service access matters. Some repairs require sliding the unit out of its opening. We protect your floor and cabinetry and reinstall to the original alignment.
- Parts are brand-specific. Control boards, sensors, fans and ice makers for built-ins are rarely interchangeable. We use original manufacturer parts.
- Two systems, not one. Many luxury refrigerators use separate evaporators — or entirely separate sealed systems — for the fresh-food and freezer sections, so one side can fail while the other works perfectly.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth repairing an old built-in refrigerator?
Usually, yes. A new 36- or 48-inch built-in costs many thousands of dollars before installation and cabinet modification. Even a sealed-system repair on a 15-year-old Sub-Zero is often a fraction of that. We give you an honest repair-versus-replace recommendation on every visit.
How often should a built-in refrigerator be serviced?
Clean the top-mounted condenser every six months in Las Vegas. A yearly checkup that includes condenser cleaning, gasket inspection, and an ice maker and water filter check catches small issues before they become sealed-system repairs.
Can you repair a column refrigerator if only one column has a problem?
Yes. Each column is an independent appliance. We diagnose and repair the failed column without disturbing the others.
