The Samsung ice maker problem
On many Samsung French-door refrigerators, the ice maker sits in the upper-left fresh-food door rather than in the freezer. Cold air is ducted up to it. When the ice compartment seal leaks or its heater and airflow are off balance, ice builds up around the ice maker and ice bucket, the fill tube freezes, and ice production stops. Water may also drip from the ice compartment or dispenser. This was common enough that it became the subject of a class-action lawsuit.
A proper repair goes beyond chipping out the ice. We look at the compartment seal, the fill tube heater, the ice maker and its sensors, and whether an updated part or kit is available for your model.
Other common Samsung repairs
- Fresh-food side warm, freezer fine — the fresh-food evaporator ices over (often with fan noise from ice hitting the blade), caused by defrost problems or a drain issue
- Loud fan noise — ice contacting the evaporator fan
- Water on the floor — frozen drain or ice compartment leak
- Not cooling at all — compressor or inverter board faults, and condenser airflow
- Water dispenser not working — frozen line in the door, water valve or filter
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Samsung ice maker keep freezing up?
Usually because warm, humid air reaches the ice compartment or because the defrost and heater circuits around the ice maker are not doing their job. A temporary manual defrost restores ice for a while; a lasting repair addresses the cause. See ice maker repair.
Can I force-defrost a Samsung refrigerator myself?
Many Samsung models have a forced-defrost test mode accessed through a button combination on the control panel. It can melt ice temporarily. If ice comes back within weeks, there is an underlying failure to repair.
