What is your refrigerator doing?

Find your refrigerator's symptom — not cooling, freezer cold but fridge warm, iced-over evaporator, leaks, clicking — and learn what it means.

Cooling problems

The refrigerator is warm, not cold enough, or swinging between temperatures.

Freezer, frost and defrost

The freezer is warm, or ice and frost are building up where they should not.

Compressor and sealed system

The compressor will not start, or it runs without producing cold.

Power and electronics

The refrigerator is dead, trips a breaker, or started acting up after an outage.

Water, ice and leaks

Ice makers, dispensers, drains and water on the floor.

Noise, doors and condensation

New sounds, doors that do not seal, sweating and frost on food.

How to use these pages

Pick the symptom closest to what your refrigerator is doing. Each page explains what the symptom usually means, the most likely causes, what you can safely check yourself, and what a technician tests. If several things are happening at once — the fridge is warm and the freezer has ice on the back wall, for example — that combination is often the fastest clue to the real failure.

A symptom rarely identifies a single part. "Not cooling" can be a $200 fan or a sealed-system leak. The pages help you understand the possibilities; a diagnosis confirms which one you have.

These pages apply to all major brands — LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, GE, GE Profile, KitchenAid, Maytag, Hisense, Kenmore, Amana, Haier, Bosch, Café, Electrolux, Hotpoint, Insignia, JennAir, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Fisher & Paykel, Monogram, Midea, Viking and more. Brand-specific notes are on the brand pages and the error code pages.
