Samsung refrigerator error codes explained

Samsung refrigerators show a number followed by E or C (for example 22E or 22C) when the control board detects a fault. Most codes point to a fan, sensor, heater or the ice maker — not the compressor. Two messages that look like errors are not: OF OF means cooling is switched off (demo mode), and the display may flash codes briefly after a power interruption.

Common Samsung codes

CodeMeaningWhat usually causes it
OF OF / O FFCooling Off (demo) modeDisplay mode turned on — lights and display work but nothing cools
21E / 21CFreezer fan errorIce on the freezer evaporator fan, or a failed fan motor
22E / 22CFridge fan errorIce on the fresh-food evaporator fan — very common; usually a defrost or drain issue behind it
5E / 5CDefrost sensor errorFailed defrost sensor or wiring, often with ice buildup
33EIce pipe heater errorThe heater that keeps the ice maker fill tube from freezing has failed
39E / 39CIce maker errorIce maker cannot complete its cycle — frozen, jammed or failed module
40E / 40CIce room fan errorIce compartment fan blocked by ice or failed
PC ER / PC CHCommunication errorMain board and door or display electronics are not communicating — wiring, door hinge harness or board

Code formats differ between model years. Newer models use a "C" suffix in place of "E" for the same fault. Your exact model's code list is on the tech sheet, usually behind the bottom front grille or inside the fresh-food section.

What to do when you see a code

  1. Write the code down before resetting anything. It helps the diagnosis.
  2. Check for OF OF first. If cooling is off, consult your owner's manual to exit Cooling Off mode — it is a button combination on the control panel, held for several seconds.
  3. Reset once. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker for five minutes, then restore power. If the code comes back, there is a real fault.
  4. Look for ice. Fan codes (21E, 22E, 40E) with grinding noise almost always mean ice is blocking a fan. A manual defrost clears it temporarily, but the cause — usually the defrost system or a drain — needs repair, or the code returns.

The 22E and 39E pattern

On many Samsung French-door refrigerators, two codes show up together over time: 22E (fresh-food fan blocked by ice) and 39E (ice maker failure in the door). Both come from moisture and frost in places it should not be. This is the most common Samsung repair we perform. See Samsung refrigerator repair and ice maker repair.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clear a Samsung refrigerator error code?

Power-cycle the refrigerator by unplugging it for about five minutes. If the fault is gone, the code will not return. If it does return, the underlying part still needs repair.

Is it safe to keep using my Samsung refrigerator with an error code?

Usually yes for a short time, as long as food stays at 40°F or below in the fresh-food section and 0°F in the freezer. Check with a thermometer. If temperatures rise, move perishables and call for service.

Does a Samsung error code mean the compressor is bad?

Rarely. Most Samsung codes point to fans, sensors, heaters or the ice maker. Compressor and inverter problems usually show up as poor cooling rather than one of the common codes above.
