Check these first
- Replace the water filter. An old filter is the most common cause of slow water. In Las Vegas, filters clog faster because of hard water.
- Try without the filter (if your model has a bypass cap or allows it). If water flows strongly, the filter was the problem.
- Check the supply valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink.
- Check the freezer temperature. Below about –5°F, water lines in the door can freeze.
- Check the door switch or child lock. Many dispensers have a lock setting on the control panel.
Causes and fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Slow flow | Clogged filter, low pressure, scaled valve | Filter, check pressure, replace valve |
| No water, ice maker works | Frozen door line, dispenser switch | Thaw line, address cause, replace switch |
| No water and no ice | Supply valve closed, water inlet valve failed | Open supply, replace valve |
| Dripping after dispensing | Normal small drip, or a failing valve | Monitor; replace valve if constant |
| Water tastes bad | Old filter, stagnant water | New filter, flush several gallons |
What a refrigerator technician checks
- Supply pressure and flow at the inlet valve
- Water inlet valve coils and screen
- Door water line for ice blockage, and the door heater where used
- Dispenser switch, actuator and control signal
- Filter head and bypass
- Freezer temperature (lines freeze if it runs too cold)
Frequently asked questions
How do I thaw a frozen water line in the refrigerator door?
On many models, you can carefully use a hair dryer on low heat at the dispenser outlet, or unplug the refrigerator for several hours. If it refreezes, the freezer may be set too cold, or a door heater or seal needs repair.
How often should I change my refrigerator water filter in Las Vegas?
Every six months, or sooner if water flow slows down.
