Common codes
| Code | Meaning | What usually causes it |
|---|---|---|
| PO | Power outage | Power was interrupted. Check food temperatures, then press any button to clear. Not a fault. |
| SY EF | Evaporator fan circuit error | Failed evaporator fan motor, ice on the fan, wiring, or the main control board |
| SY CF | Condenser fan circuit error | Failed condenser fan motor, a jammed fan, wiring, or the control board |
| SY CE | Communication error | Main board and user-interface board are not communicating — wiring (often at the door hinge) or a board |
Which codes appear depends on the model. Many Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir French-door and side-by-side models with electronic displays use these codes. Basic models without a display do not show codes. Instead, a technician uses a diagnostic mode or checks the components directly.
What to do when you see a code
- PO: confirm temperatures with a thermometer and clear the alert. If food was above 40°F for more than two hours, discard perishables.
- SY EF or SY CF: power-cycle the refrigerator once. If the code returns, the fan or the board must be tested. Listen for grinding (ice on the evaporator fan) and check that the condenser fan at the bottom rear spins freely.
- SY CE: check that the doors are fully closed and power-cycle once. A recurring SY CE usually means a damaged wire in the door hinge harness or a failed board.
Why the board is not always the answer
All three SY codes are reported by the main control board, so the board is often replaced first. In practice, a failed fan motor or a damaged wire is more common and much cheaper. We test the motor and the wiring before recommending a control board.
Frequently asked questions
Do KitchenAid, Maytag and JennAir use the same codes as Whirlpool?
Many models do, because all four brands are built by Whirlpool Corporation and share control platforms. Exact codes vary by model; the tech sheet inside the unit lists the codes for your model.
What does "PO" mean on my Whirlpool refrigerator?
Power outage. The refrigerator lost power and recovered. It is a notification, not a failure.
